Functional Medicine

Functional medicine is a science-based approach to how the body works as an integrated whole. It focuses on getting to the root of the problem — not just the symptoms of the problem. It was started by Dr. Jeffry Bland, a Ph.D. biochemist and nutritionist.

Dr. Mark Hyman, a conventionally trained MD, embraced Functional Medicine (FM) after his own health struggles when conventional medicine could not help him. He brought FM to the Cleveland Clinic — one of the largest and most respected hospitals in the country.

Depending on the client, Functional Medicine employs comprehensive evaluations such as blood work panels, food sensitivity testing, stool tests, organic acid tests, hormone testing and heavy metal testing to identify factors contributing to health issues.

Our Applied Functional Medical Certified Practitioner (AFMC) will develop a personalized and client-focused approach to address your health goals — with lifestyle interventions and support around food and nutrition, sleep hygiene, movement, hydration, and mental & emotional stress.

Who Can Benefit?

Functional medicine treats the individual — not the disease — and strives to support the normal healing mechanisms of the body.  It can benefit:
  • Clients who are constantly tired, run down, often sick or just feel off (even though they’ve been told their bloodwork looks “fine”.)
  • Anyone with digestive issues such as heartburn, gas and bloating, acid reflux and other disorders of the "gut".
  • Those with chronic or autoimmune conditions who would like to go beyond simply managing symptoms with medications.
  • People suffering from aches and pains, taking over-the-counter pain medication more than once a week.
  • Those who need support after an illness and are struggling to regain their energy and vitality.
Your AFMC will look at all aspects of an individual’s lifestyle, beliefs, and genetic predispositions. Functional medicine practitioners seek to identify and address the root causes of disease and imbalances.

We do encourage you to maintain a good relationship with your primary care physician, especially if you are on prescription medications.

Introducing the Science of BrainTap®!

The modern world bombards our brains with an overwhelming amount of inputs and stressors. Our brains are struggling to adapt. A lack of brain balance means many of us are anxious — looking for energy in the wrong places and struggling to get a good night's sleep.
Our Applied Functional Medical Certified Practitioner can introduce you to the technology of BrainTap® — which combines a variety of proven methods to restore balance to your brain for optimal performance of mind and body.
What is BrainTap®?
Central to the technology is the concept of brainwave entrainment. Using an app and BrainTap® headset, you'll be exposed to rhythmic beats, tones, guided visualization, holographic music and light frequencies. Your brain will naturally synchronize with the external rhythms — creating full spectrum brainwave activity.
Benefits include:
  • Improved clarity: the power to maintain perspective, think clearly and learn quickly.
  • Quality sleep: the tools to get to sleep fast and sleep deep.
  • More energy: the ability to recharge your system, accessing new energy and motivation.
Prior to using the BrainTap® technology, Karin will perform a heart rate variability stress assessment to evaluate your body's ability to cope with internal and external stress. The resulting data can provide insights into your physiological response to stress and overall well being.

Karin Mullooly, Applied Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner

I had my first experience with the power of treating the whole person with my own son, 16 years ago.  He was a rambunctious three-year-old who was speech delayed and considered to be on the spectrum. A holistic practitioner suggested I remove gluten and food dyes from his diet. I admit I was skeptical, but we had nothing to lose. Within 24 hours we saw a difference; he was calmer and easier to communicate with.  All his therapists and his teacher noticed a change in him, and he started to make great strides in his development. My son is now on the Dean's list, an engineering student at USC!

Figuring out less toxic, non-invasive ways to support my family led me to further my education to incorporate nutritional support, lifestyle interventions, and patient education to improve the health of others. I graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition where I learned innovative coaching methods to support my clients.

I was then accepted to the School of Applied Functional Medicine, a rigorous three-year program for health professionals, where I became a board-certified functional medicine practitioner. This has allowed me to understand my clients' biochemistry, physiology and system functions so I may address the root causes of their issues. With my experience and knowledge, we can create personalized steps to move you toward your vision of health.
